  • Overview

To be part of our organization, every employee should understand and share in the YNHHS Vision, support our Mission, and live our Values. These values—integrity, patient-centered, respect, accountability, and compassion—must guide what we do, as individuals and professionals, every day.

The chief resident (CR) is the central educational and administrative figure of the residency and functions as a clinician-educator. His/her roles include leadership, administration, education, and clinical supervision. The chief resident reports directly to the program director and works closely with the clinics and program coordinator.

    Responsibilities

    • 1. Leadership:
      • 1.1 The CR serves as spokesperson for residents. He/she helps the faculty to set standards of excellence, promoting standards of patient care and professional conduct.
    • 2. Education:
      • 2.1 The CR is regarded as a "junior" member of faculty who coordinates and may chair educational activities for residents, students and attending physicians in the Department. The CR sits on the Internal Residency Review Committee and thus contributes to continuous improvement in educational programs.
    • 3. Administration:
      • 3.1 The CR works with the program director and residency coordinator to develop schedules for residents. The CR helps choose house staff on the Selection Committee, resolves resident conflicts, and contributes to selection of new interns. The CR is considered a junior faculty member. The CR performs teaching rounds on the Private Wards Service twice weekly, performs clinical skills exercises (CEX) in both inpatient and outpatient areas and may occasionally precept patient care in the clinic.
    • 4. Supervision:
      • 4.1 The CR ensures residents compliance with RRC/ACGME rules and assists in evaluation of house staff clinical performance measures. The CR will also attend in the ambulatory/continuity clinic a minimum of 2 half-days/week and will attend on the general medicine inpatient teaching units up to 2 months annually (at the discretion of the Chairman).
    • 5. List of responsibilities in detail:
      • 5.1 Morning reports:
Wards Service residents will attend and present new cases or special cases of interest to the CR and attending faculty (Mon, Tues, Thurs). A special Wednesday morning report includes mainly cardiology case presentations.
